Background of the study
Twitter trends in Nigeria often give rise to hashtag based neologisms, where users coin new words and phrases to encapsulate contemporary socio-political and cultural phenomena. These neologisms emerge from the creative repurposing of hashtags, which serve not only as topic markers but also as instruments of lexical innovation (Akinyele, 2023). Nigerian Twitter users harness the power of brevity and rapid communication to generate neologisms that quickly gain popularity, influencing both digital discourse and everyday language. The dynamic environment of Twitter, characterized by its fast-paced interactions and viral nature, provides fertile ground for such linguistic creativity. This study compares various Twitter trends to identify common patterns in hashtag based neologism formation, investigating the morphological processes involved and the semantic shifts that accompany these new expressions (Ibrahim, 2024). By examining different case studies, the research aims to document the lifecycle of these neologisms and assess their broader impact on digital language evolution in Nigeria.
Statement of the problem
Although hashtag based neologisms are prevalent in Nigerian Twitter discourse, there is limited research on their formation, dissemination, and impact on language. Most existing studies focus on the social and political implications of hashtags without delving into their linguistic dimensions (Chukwu, 2024). This gap restricts our understanding of how digital communication fosters lexical innovation and semantic change. The study seeks to address this deficiency by providing a comparative analysis of hashtag based neologisms, thereby elucidating the mechanisms behind their emergence and influence on Nigerian language practices (Afolabi, 2023).
